Quercitin
What is quercitin? It was mentioned in that previous article on Histamine Intolerance as one of Dr. Morstein's most commonly used products for treatment.
Quercitin is a polyphenol bioflavonoid. Bioflavinoids are antioxidants; they neutralize "free radicals" which can damage cells, damage DNA, and even cause cell death.
Bioflavinoids also help prevent mast cells from breaking open from a stimuli and releasing histamine. Quercitin is considered one of the stronger antiallergic bioflavonoids. Mixed with Vitamin C, which helps break down any released histamine, the combination is a great protocol for helping to reduce allergic and histaminic signs and symptoms.
Quercitin is found in onions, citrus fruits, apples, tea, grapes, berries and some spices such as parsley.
Quercitin should be avoided in pregnant women. There are few other concerns about this useful bioflavonoids. Dosages for patients can be 200-2000 mg a day, although 2000 mg a day is not commonly dosed.
